The ski area

The Chamonix ski area is one of the oldest in the Alpes, ranging all the way back to the 19th century. It has evolved over the years and today it offers 67 ski lifts and 119 runs in total. The ski area is spread out across five mountains; Grand Montets, L’Aguille du Midi, Le Brévent, Le Flégere and Le Tour. The separate ski areas mean that you will have to take the bus to and from the areas. There are regular bus connections in Chamonix included in your ski pass.

Grand Montets

Situated between the altitudes of 1235 and 2800 meters, this area gives you access to some really long runs. You start by taking the lift Planjoran from the village Argentiére to get up on the mountain. From here there are a few lifts to choose from. The area mostly consist of red and black slopes, so it is recommended for the more experienced skier. Although there is a few blue slopes to practice in as well. The longest run goes from the top of Bochard, taking the first red slope downwards and then over to the Pierre á ric slope going all the way down to Argentiére.

L’Aiguille du Midi

A world-famous area consisting of one ski lift taking you all the way from Chamonix village up to 3812 meters above sea level. Once you’re on the top, there are no slopes to go down. The area is only suitable for off-piste skiing. The well-known Vallée Blanche ski route starts from L’Aiguille du Midi and gives you access to a 20 km long off-piste route. We do however strongly recommend you too hire a mountain guide if you wish to ski from L’Aiguille du Midi.

Le Brévent/ La Flégère

The Brévent ski station is the closest one from the center of Chamonix. We recommend you to take the bus though, as the hill up to the bottom station is deceptively steep. The Brévent ski area offers mostly red and black slopes, but there are a few green and blue runs for the beginner as well. From the bottom, you can take the Plan Praz lift to get up to the mountain. From there you can either start skiing and move to different parts of the area or you can go all the way up to the Brévent peak at 2525 meters and ski the black slope “Bozen”. Le Brévent is connected to the Flégère area by the Maison lift. La Flégère mostly consists of red runs and has 6 lifts and 14 slopes. In Flégère we especially recommend the Lachenal and Crochoues runs, both red slopes situated inbetween mountain peaks.

Le Tour

Le Tour area is suitable for intermediates and beginners. It has 19 slopes in total; 1 black, 7 reds and 11 blues at a lower altitude ranging from 1264 meters to 2250 meters. The area’s main peak is Téte de Balme. From here you will have both red and blue slopes to choose from, as well as the possibility of continuing towards the other peak of the area, Les Autannes. From Autannes, there are more choices of slopes, making it a good place for beginners to practice their skiing.
